My Newport, RI Travel Guide is here! Joe and I recently visited over Memorial Day Weekend. This was my second time visiting, but Joe’s first trip. Since we booked our trip only a month or so in advance we ended up staying in an Airbnb. Not only was it affordable, but it had a view of the water! We also got free parking which was such a nice perk. Who wants to stress about parking on their vacation?
Saturday
We arrived very early on Saturday morning, and went straight to the Corner Café for brunch. Since this place doesn’t take reservations I was nervous we would have a long wait. Luckily we only had to wait 15-20 minutes. You really can’t go wrong with what you order. Their food was so good we came back again on Monday before heading out. I recommend ordering their pancakes or one of the Eggs Benedict specials.
After brunch, we took a tour of The Breakers. For those of you who don’t know, Newport is filled with beautiful old mansions that are open for tours. You can pay for guided tours, but their audio tours are just as informative. All of the extravagant detail in each room is amazing! They even had platinum on one of the walls! But the best part about The Breakers is the view. It has a large backyard that overlooks the water. Absolutely breathtaking!
Since it was such a beautiful day, we then headed to Newport Vineyards where we participated in a wine tasting. Ultimately, our indecisiveness got the best of us and we ended up buying 6 bottles post-wine tasting.
For dinner on our first night we headed to Smoke House. They don’t take reservations, so we got there on the early side. Luckily, we got a seat right away, but it was crowded at their outdoor bar. This place is the the perfect casual restaurant near the water. If you go, I recommend getting the nachos with chili. They were so good!
The rest of the night we bopped around checking out some of the local bars. We ended up staying at The Red Parrot for a while before heading back. We just sat at the bar, but if you have kids, this is a great place to take them. Very family friendly and for the adults they have every cocktail under the sun!
Sunday
On Sunday, we also got an early start to our day. We checked out The Hungry Monkey for brunch which we enjoyed. Joe had a Portuguese Eggs Benedict while I had a Veggie Breakfast Burrito. Following brunch we drove down Ocean Drive admiring the beautiful coast and mansions and ended up at The Cliff Walk. This is a trail along the water with gorgeous views. In total, to walk from end-to-end and back it’s roughly 8 miles. We only walked a portion of it.
Next we headed to The Castle Hill Inn, another beautiful place located right on the water. I didn’t go inside the Inn, but we went out back to their lawn filled with Adirondack chairs and relaxed with a few drinks while admiring the sailboats sailing by.
Then we headed back towards the Airbnb to check out the local shops before our Champagne Sunset Sail. This is a great activity to do on a nice day, but I recommend booking in advance since they sell out quickly. While on the sail they provide you with complimentary beers and champagne, blankets if you get chilly, and some historical background to some of the buildings we passed. It’s a really nice way to end the day, especially if you plan to have a late dinner reservation like Joe and I did.
By the end of the Sunset Sail we were starving and headed to Jo’s American Bistro for dinner. They had live music down in the bar, but since we had a late reservation, we missed it. If you’re big on pasta like me, check out their four cheese penne. It’s delicious!
Monday
On Monday, we were sad to leave. Especially since it was another gorgeous day! We really lucked out on weather for our trip. Before heading out we grabbed some coffee at The Coffee Grinder and headed back to the Corner Cafe for brunch. Surprisingly we were sat almost immediately this time and we got to sit outside. A perfect way to end our weekend in Newport. Of course, we could have easily stayed another day, but it’s just an excuse to go back next year!
Overall, we had an amazing trip! I always said Savannah, GA was one of the prettiest places I’ve visited in the US, but after visiting Newport, I think they’re tied. Newport is absolutely breathtaking!
How’d you spend your Memorial Day Weekend?
Sincerely,
K
